Improve Turfgrass Response to Water Deficit

Industry innovation requires persistence, a keen understanding of customer needs and commitment to science.  BRANDT offers this type of innovation in the form of a new GRIGG Proven Foliar nutrient formulation, Turftopia, which improves turfgrass hydration and resiliency during environmental extremes. Coupled with the existing BRANDT iHammer glycoregulator technology, turf managers now have access to an effective anti-stress program that supplements our existing and efficient nutritional products.

Turftopia contains a suite of osmoprotectants and a powerful antioxidant. Turftopia should be tank mixed with other highly efficient GRIGG Proven Foliar fertilizers to meet plant nutrient demand. One important advantage of Turftopia is the ability for the turf manger to produce firm and fast playing conditions, without compromising color and vigor (Figure 1).

Figure 2. Effect of Turftopia and a nitrogen check on the NDVI of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis) exposed to water deficit [12% volumetric water content (VWC) as measured by time domain reflectometry (TDR)].

This affords the practitioner an opportunity to a.) be judicious with water resources and b.) robustly prime the plant for severe drought conditions – strengthening it long term. Our research suggests a combination of increased plant defense and higher leaf water content as the primary mechanisms of action. These responses improve overall turfgrass quality and performance (Figure 2).

BRANDT iHammer technology offers a specific glycoregulator that releases stored energy and increases rooting. The improved root growth provides additional surface area for water and nutrient acquisition and will improve the health and viability of shallow rooted fine turfgrass species such as annual bluegrass (Poa annua). The basic science behind BRANDT iHammer’s patented glycoregulator technologyis compelling, developed by one of the most important scientists of the 20thcentury, Dr. Andrew Benson. More information on glycoregulator technology can be found here.

When organized as part of a rotational program, the combination of Turftopia and BRANDT iHammer Megalex provides and effective anti-stress supplement to an efficient nutrient management strategy. Learn more about the details of this strategy here.
