Side Dressing Nitrogen

Cool wet weather has helped back Growing Degree Units in the farm but things are looking to improve over the next week. Soybeans are about ready to push through the surface and the Corn is finally starting to grow.

We took advantage of a nice day to do some nitrogen application to the 20” Corn. The North Research Farm wanted to make sure it got applied before the growing point moved above the soil line. Our tractor tires barely fit between the rows and we did not want to take a chance of breaking off any corn plants. While the growing point is below ground corn plants can flex a lot however once above the soil line plants can become brittle and break off if pushed too hard or ran over.

All in all a slow but successful start to our growing season.
